Beginnings

From a vast expanse of cogon fields, the empty land was transformed into the realization of a dream by the founding fathers of Saint Joseph School (SJS).

In 1960, SJS welcomed its pioneer students, embracing the mission of apostolic teaching and evangelization.

Within a decade, the student body tripled in number, leading to the construction of the gymnasium and boy’s dormitory.

PD 1976

The decade presented numerous challenges, including the destruction of the gymnasium and the passing of the founding bishop. Despite these difficulties, enrollment continued to grow, leading to the introduction of the kindergarten program.

In 1976, through Presidential Decree 1976, SJS was officially recognized as a Chinese-Filipino Catholic school.

To further support the spiritual formation of its students, the SJS Chapel was constructed.

Growth

SJS continued to grow as a learning institution, marked by the inauguration of a new building for kindergarten students and a two-story facility that housed the canteen, clinic, offices, and social hall.

Within 30 years of its founding, SJS had firmly established itself as a respected and pioneering Catholic Chinese-Filipino school in Naga City.

Fresh minds & hearts

Recognizing the need for fresh leadership and guidance, SJS welcomed the Roman Catholic Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from Taiwan to help oversee its mission.

Over the years, SJS has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics and has become renowned for its strong emphasis on student discipline.

Above challenges

In its 50th year, SJS overcame challenges by introducing innovative programs and enhancing its facilities.

The Sisters of the Sacred Heart spearheaded new initiatives, including the IPAN Program for children with special needs, the addition of a nursery level in preschool, and study tour and enculturation programs in Taiwan and Xiamen.

State-of-the-art facilities were also introduced, including the Bishop Côté Building (popularly known as the Castle), the Msgr. Joseph Chen Activity Center, a multimedia room, an expanded library, and a newly renovated science laboratory.

New challenges, new responsibilities

A high school building named after Rev. Fr. Joseph Limingchin was constructed, followed by the renovation and expansion of the cafeteria in honor of Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Chin.

Today, Saint Joseph School remains steadfast in its mission to serve its community of students, parents, and educators, upholding the philosophies of its founding fathers. With each new challenge and responsibility, SJS continues to stand resilient—like the plum blossoms in its school logo.
